Grow Tomatoes in Containers for an Extended Season

By J Ruppel One big advantage to growing tomatoes in containers is that you can grow them just about anywhere with lots of sunlight. You can move them to protect them from bad cold spells, and sneak a few extra weeks into the growing season. With a little extra attention to watering, you will be rewarded with a bumper crop of tomatoes. The Keys to successful tomato container plantings include: The container: A standard type pot with a diameter of at least 12 inches is recommended is a good choice. It must have drainage holes in the bottom to avoid root rot. Half whiskey barrels and and bushel baskets can be used too. Choose Your Tomato: Most varieties of tomato will grow in a container, but make sure that the variety that you choose fits the area you’ve chosen. Choose smaller tomatoes like cherry tomatoes for hotter climates since they will set fruit longer. Sweet 100 is always a favorite. Getting Started: The easiest way to start the plants it to buy them from the nursery. If you can’t find what you want at the local nursery, you may want to start your own using peat pellets or pots. Your container soil: In a container you can mix the soil as you wish to give you the best yields. Always use lots of organic matter to improve drainage. A soil mix of one part each of potting soil, perlite, sphagnum peat moss and compost is good. Tomatoes usually require some type of fertilizer. Make sure that it’s a fertilizer for tomatoes. Planting in the container Fill the container most of the way with your soil mix. Put the soil mix around the plant up to the first set of true leaves. Water and add more soil until it comes close to the top of the container. Staking your tomatoes: Some tomato plants will need to be staked. Do this when you plant so you don’t damage the roots inserting the stakes later. Tomato cages or stakes can be used. Water your tomatoes at least once a week, make sure they are staked properly, add fertilizer again when needed, and enjoy your tomatoes. Put them in the garage for that first freeze of the fall, and hope for an extra week or two in your growing season. Know your Man: Being a Prize Possession

By Maria Moratto Prize ~ Brainy Dictionary 1. That which may be won by chance, as in a lottery. 2. To set or estimate the value of; to appraise; to price; to rate. Men are not our dolls. They are not our puppies. They are not a prize. Lets not show them off. It is very difficult for a proud woman not to show off her spouse. Women tend to do this. We do this with our children and we find hard not to do it with our mates. However, most men dont like to be the center of such attention. The other day, my son got an award, a prestigious one at that, and I immediately sent an email about this great feat to my entire contact list. He was not too happy about it: why did you do that? He complained. Because mothers do that, was my only excuse. I never thought that he would question my behavior, of proudly showing him off. Now, with spouses this may be tricky. While some enjoy the limelight, most dont. I was visiting a new friend the other day and decided to take a look at her husbands work; Alex is a graphic artist. He was explaining to me how he does his craft, showing me his new project for a newspaper. As I had never seen a graphic artist at work, I found it fascinating. After a while, Cathy enters the room with a portfolio in her hands. This was one of the collections he had created earlier. She showed it to me. I was even more impressed by the caliber of his work. However, her husband didnt appreciate her gesture. He didnt like to be the center of attention, I guess. Whatever his reasons were, it was clear that he was upset with his wife. He didnt like her behavior a bit, even though her reasons were all flattering. It was not difficult to see that he was utterly embarrassed. That is to say, that even though he deserved praise, he was not ready to accept any. She failed to respect his wishes. A Word of Advice: Ladies and Gents: Have an agreement with each other regarding this issue before it comes up, or, if too late, before another occasion arises. If you dont like to be the center of attention for such things, express it very clearly; you spouse will comply, I am sure. The Top 5 Model Train Accessories

By B. Murphy Many people’s first introduction to model railroading happens when they put together a simple circle or oval on a sheet of plywood. Theres no backdrop of any kind, and there may not be buildings or vehicles to provide any kind of realistic background. For those who become passionate about it, however, adding accessories to the railroad become necessary as they strive for realism. For enthusiasts, this can become a lifelong hobby, and can grow exponentially as they continue. Every layout is different and everyone has favored accessories, but the following 5 accessories are some of the most common. They will add realism to your model railroad and make it more interesting to use. 1. Train Station Most people add this to their layout as one of the first accessories. It gives the railroad both a beginning and ending, and may be the locus around which to build an entire town or city, eventually. 2. Lighting There are many ways to light a railroad. Background lighting can add a degree of realism, or street lights may add atmosphere to your city. The lights may be strictly decorative, or they may actually provide lighting for nighttime scenes. 3. Rail Cars The locomotive comes first and is often the focal point of any railroad setup, but rail cars will let you expand the look and length of your train. There are many kinds available. 4. People and Animals A city or rail yard wouldnt be complete without people included as a necessary part of the scenery. And if your railroads track travels through mountains or countryside scenery, animals also add realism to the backdrop. 5. Landscaping You can provide landscape for a railroad in endless ways. Add things like grass, trees, lakes or rivers to the background and scenery. For more detail, add hills and valleys for your train to travel through. You can even include tunnels going through the mountains. Bill Murphy writes about various model train related topics such as garden railroads on the Zogol.com website. Weddings: How To Make Your Perfume Last On Your Wedding Day

By Anne Mihelakos Perfume can be defined as a woman’s signature. We have all worn it at one time or another. Many of us wont leave home without a quick spray or a dab. But when you are getting married, for that very special day, what perfume will you choose to wear and how can you make it last the day? Will you choose something that you always wear, or are you prepared to try something different, perhaps a romantic scent? Read on to find out how you can create your signature scent to see you through the entire day. There are some gorgeous perfumes available, take some time to try a few and find the one that is right for you. You could even make a day of it. Grab a couple of girlfriends and visit your favourite department store, together you can have a play around with many of the fragrances. It is probably worth doing a couple of times, as different weather or different seasons might change your mood. Some of the romantic scents you might like to try include:- Cartier so Pretty Guerlain Shalimar Christian Dior J’Adore Lancome Poeme Estee Lauder Beautiful Yves Saint Laurent Paris Thierry Mugle Angel Calvin Klein’s Eternity Once you have selected your scent, you will need to invest in three things, the bath/shower gel or soap, the body lotion and the perfume itself. Together, they will be magnificent and create your signature scent for your wedding day. When organising your wedding, make sure you allocate yourself time in the morning for a small amount of self pampering, before you have your hair and makeup done. Plan a little time to luxuriate in a nice warm bath or stand under a warm running shower. Close your eyes and feel the warmth of the water on your skin, close your mind to all the noise and activity around you for just a moment. Then reach for the wash cloth soaked with your bath gel, inhale its beautiful perfume and then lather yourself from chin to toes, creating the first layer of your signature. When you have finished your bath or shower, pat yourself dry with a beautifully thick bath towel and whilst your pores are still open, apply the next layer of your perfume, the body lotion. Using it as your moisturiser apply it all over, including neck, arms, legs, torso and even your feet. Now with the foundation set you are ready to meet the rest of the challenges of getting ready. Last but not least the perfume. You should plan to put this on no less than 10 minutes before you slip on your dress, to give your perfume enough time to absorb into the skin and dry on the surface. You DON’T want to stain your dress! Spray or dab the perfume on all your pulse zones, behind your ears, on your neck, behind your knees and on your wrists. Do not rub the perfume in, as this will bruise the scent. Just put it on and give it time to dry. With the final layer done, your signature scent is ready! This will probably last you the entire day and through the evening, but if you wish to freshen up a little, plan to dab on a wee extra just before your reception. Hydrate to Lose Weight: The Real Skinny On Water Retention and Sodium

By Michael Callen If you’ve been scouring the news, devouring as much information as possible regarding weight loss, you’ve likely heard all the buzz about the relationship between weight loss and drinking water. It has been well documented that the liver is able to metabolize more fat if you help out your kidneys by drinking plenty of water each day. What is not often explained is water’s relationship to salt and how to tell when you are drinking enough water. The purpose of this article is to focus on these two issues. First of all, let’s take a look at how our bodies deal with salt! Salt (sodium, at least) is a necessary ingredient to regulate blood pressure and fluid volumes in our bodies. Additionally, it is a top notch preservative and it tastes good! Salt is — well — the salt of the earth. Sorry … Like everything else, we can have too much of a good thing, though. If you’ve ever seen an ocean disaster movie where people are adrift in the sea hoping for rescue, you’ve probably heard the warning to not drink salt water. This warning is true and must be heeded if you find yourself adrift at sea, or on a diet. The reason is that the body can only handle a certain concentration of salt. If you eat a really salty meal, you may notice that your body will experience some swelling. This swelling is retained water which is being kept by the body in order to keep the salt in solution. So how do you get rid of retained water?? Well, believe it or not, the answer is that you drink water to get rid of water! That’s right. It’s counterintuitive, but true. By drinking extra water, it will allow your body to “flush” the excess salt out and to release the retained water. Think of it this way, your body grows to “expect” a particular amount of sodium and a particular volume of water. It “reserves” water in your body knowing more salt is to come. When you drink a gallon of water over the course of the day, your body “learns” that you are providing plenty of water. Eventually it begins to “trust” that you’ll continue doing so and it lets go of the surplus. At seven pounds per gallon, it can add up to a lot of weight quickly. Secondly, we want to discuss how to tell if you are getting enough water. The first step toward turning yourself into a human water meter is to get on a regimen of drinking more water each day. Try to drink twelve (8 ounce) glasses of water each day when you are dieting, and at least eight when you reach your optimal weight. (These are guidelines that must be adjusted using common sense. There may be circumstances such as weather, type of work, body size, physical activity and many others that will require you to drink much more or less than this.) If you are more than twenty pounds overweight, you should drink an extra glass for every 20 pounds over your optimal weight. Once you’ve been on this regimen for a few weeks, you should notice some changes (beyond being exhausted by the hundreds of trips to the restroom — just kidding!) Many people report that their skin looks and feels better, that headaches disappear, that they require less sleep and that they simply have more energy. Biologically though, the best way to tell if you are drinking enough water is the color (rather the lack of color) of your urine. Many people think that color in their urine is due to waste being flushed out of the body, but it is, in fact, simply due to a shortage of water. Clear urine means you are drinking plenty of water. Another benefit to drinking plenty of water is that your natural water alarm clock (thirst) will return. Your body will begin to signal to you that it is thirsty since it is no longer in the habit of hoarding water. Listen to your body and you’ll continue to lose weight and burn fat. Here are a few tips to help you drink more water each day (if any of these tips work for you, use post-it note reminders until they become habit): 1. Cut peeled citrus fruits into squares and freeze them. Float them in your drinking water and treat yourself to them at the end of each glass. 2. Always carry a big water bottle with you so that you can drink while you are running errands, driving, or waiting. 3. Stop drinking coffee, tea and soda that contain caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, which means that it causes your body to lose, or expel, water. Try drinking water with decaffeinated Green Tea Extract, instead. It’s delicious. An Examination of Embroidery Machines

By Peter Vermeeren Embroidery machines provide an excellent way for a business to achieve the fast and efficient production of embroidered goods. No human hand can match the speed of the computerized embroidery machines. For example, the Melco machine allows the user to complete 1500 stitches in one minute. The embroidery machines offer similar speed from Tajima and Barudon. The purchase of embroidery machines calls for an examination of the equipment and services that are included in the purchase package. Number one on the list of necessary additions to all embroidery machines is design software. The more extensive the software that comes with any group of embroidery machines the greater the variety of the designs that can be created. Greater variety in designs helps the business owner to please a larger number of customers. The purchase of embroidery machines should also be preceded by an inquiry into the available process support. In other words, will the machine maker have someone close at hand, someone who can answer any questions that might arise as business owners use the embroidery machines? Usually the use of embroidery machines needs the preparation that comes with customer training. Hence, plans for that training should be part of the machine purchase. Of course, the business owner does not necessarily have to purchase an embroidery machine. Such machines can also be leased. Many suppliers of embroidery machines agree to either sell or lease the equipment. This flexibility is a definite plus, and it would be another reason for choosing one particular supplier. Finally the business owner must look ahead to the day when he or she has many functioning embroidery machines. What happens if one of those machines suddenly ceases to function properly? Can it be quickly and easily repaired? Does the supplier offer any method for a temporary replacement of the broken machine? If a supplier cannot promise a yes answer to those questions, then that supplier lacks the necessary network of service agencies. The businessperson who wants to buy embroidery machines will want to avoid a supplier with a poor network of service agencies. He or she will seek a supplier who can guarantee a complete package design software, process support, customer training and ready access to customer service. The availability of a leasing program would also be a definite plus. When a supplier offers all that, then the businessperson has found a good source of embroidery machines. The businessperson who has a good source of embroidery machines can then proceed to plan for the production of a variety of different embroidered goods. He or she will be in a position to plan for the marketing of those goods. Once business owner can count on the support of the machine maker, then he or she should have plenty of time for studying how to advertise and market the product of the embroidery machines. He or she will have started down the road to success. That business owner will have demonstrated the moneymaking potential of embroidery machines. Flower Pot Panache: Easy Ways to Jazz Up Terra Cotta Flowerpots

By Lisa Koosis Flowerpots come in all shapes and sizes these days, but for many people, classic terra cotta planters are the standard. For many, the look of terra cotta is what they’re after, a clean look that draws no attention to itself. Others, though, look upon terra cotta as bland. For those looking to punch up the look of traditional terra cotta flowerpots, there are a few easy ways to do so. – Paint it. Buy yourself a set of multi-purpose craft paints, the kind that come in a strip of little plastic containers with pop-off lids. Paint each pot in a different solid color or paint designs as intricate as time and skill-level permits. For added pizzazz, why not try stenciling. – Decoupage. Decoupage is the art of decorating something by covering it in scraps of paper or fabric. This is a wonderful technique for punching up the look of a terra cotta flower pot. You’ll need a bottle of Mod Podge, which is a sealer, glue and finisher for paper crafts. It’s readily available in craft stores. You’ll also need a selection of papers. Wrapping papers will do nicely, or you can pick up packages of papers in assorted colors and sizes in the craft shop. – Mosaic. Craft stores generally have a wonderful selection of materials to use to create a mosaic flowerpot much like the expensive ones you can purchase in patio shops and home stores. You can choose bits of tiles or glass for your project. Even sea glass or marbles can make a wonderful covering for your project. – Stamping. These days, there are rubber stamps for all occasions. Why not pick up a few pretty stamps and ink pads in assorted colors and stamp away? – Tie it up. If you’re not looking to invest a lot of time or effort into decorating flowerpots, a simple trick is to add just an accent to your pot. Raffia, a natural material that comes in assorted colors, makes a great addition to spice up bland terra cotta. Visit your craft store for other ideas. Many of the larger craft suppliers have aisles filled with terra cotta flowerpots in a number of sizes along with ideas to decorate them. Keep in mind that many materials are not weatherproof, so many of these projects work better for indoor planting. Lisa is an author on http://www.Writing.Com/ which is a site for Poetry. The Cure For The Unorganized Home School

By Gina Hobbs In my eleven years of home schooling I have met so many wonderful and diverse people. We all seem to have a passion for the education of our children, and for the education of ourselves! Life becomes the classroom..the classroom becomes a lifestyle! One thing I have found that almost all home schoolers have in common is the need for organization. Now I know that ALL families need to hone this skill, but it really is a completely different animal for the homeschooling family! When I first entertained the thought of homeschooling my children, I never dreamed that my house would become a reference section that rivaled the public library! Number 2 pencils reproduce like rabbits in every drawer and motivational stickers appear magically on the back pocket of my jeans. Glue sticks and pipe cleaners find their way into my handbag and yet when I need these things they mysteriously disappear! Things had to change, and I am happy to say that after eleven years the organization in my home has gotten better by doing these things: Forget Perfectionism Remember your goal: to raise and educate happy children! Do not fret over books on the coffee table and a few crumbs on the carpet. Come to terms with the fact that your house is going to look like someone actually USES the space. Forget the beautiful window treatments and perfect living room suite and remember the important things, like teaching your kids! Plan your day Before bed each night make out a to-do list. Do not overwhelm yourself.spread chores over the course of the week The World as Your Classroom LIFE should be part of your curriculum. Shopping and cooking can be a math opportunity. Baking and laundry can reinforce chemistry lessons. Yard work can be artistic landscaping . You get the picture. Take every opportunity to learn! Housework First Divide the daily chores among your children and do them before starting schoolwork. Dusting, vacuuming, sweeping and meal planning can be done in a short amount of time when everyone does their part. Stress Free Whenever you start to feel stressed, take a moment and remember why you do what you do. In just a few short years your children will be grown and gone. Stop, breath and rest in the fact that you do what you do because you love your family! Gina Hobbs has been homeschooling and working in educational co-ops and christian schools for eleven years and helps homeschooling families build curriculum, lesson plans and daily routines to keep their hectic lives liveable.
